When is the best time to install a fence?

We build all year. What really sets your date is paperwork, weather, and what else is happening in the yard, so plan from the finish line back.

By the 76 Fence of Conroe team · Updated

Short answer: Around Conroe, fences go in during every month of the year, so the best time is the one that fits your approvals and your plans for the yard. Spring and early summer book up fastest. If the fence has to be done by a set date, start the HOA and permit steps first, because they usually take longer than the build.

Work back from the date you need

The build is the short part. Most residential fences take a few days on site at most. What comes before it is what sets the calendar:

  1. Estimate and quote. We walk the line and send an itemized quote.
  2. HOA or architectural review. Each committee meets when it meets, and a packet missing details gets sent back. Our HOA approval guide covers what to send.
  3. City permit, if one applies. In Panorama Village, for example, the Planning & Zoning Commission has up to 30 days to approve or deny an application.
  4. Texas 811. At least two business days of notice before digging. See how 811 works.
  5. Install. Weather and material delivery set the exact day.

A new puppy, a pool fill date, or a listing photo shoot are all good reasons to book the estimate early. Count back from that date and leave the paperwork room to breathe.

Season by season around Conroe

Spring

Our busiest stretch. New homeowners in Grand Central Park, Artavia, and Mavera want back yards closed in, older builder fences show their winter damage, and everyone wants the yard ready for summer. Fronts bring rain that can shuffle dates.

Summer

Hot, with average highs in Conroe running in the mid-90s in July and August. Crews start early, and concrete sets fine. Hurricane season opens June 1, and a storm anywhere nearby fills the calendar with repair calls.

Fall

Hurricane season runs through November 30, but waits often ease as the season winds down. Cooler, drier days make fall a good window for staining or sealing an existing fence, too.

Winter

A good time to book. Underbrush thins out on wooded acreage around Huntsville and Willis, which makes walking and clearing a new line easier. Low pastures and creek bottoms near Cleveland can stay too soft for equipment after a wet week, so we check the ground before we bring a machine in.

Wet weeks and lake lots

Rain doesn't cancel a job on its own, but saturated sand and water in the holes change how we set posts. In loose or wet ground we dig deeper or wider, and on some lots it makes sense to wait a few days for the ground to drain. We'll call you if the weather moves your start.

Lakefront lots on Lake Conroe can stay soft for a while after a big SJRA release. For Lake Livingston and Huntsville, we line up nearby jobs on the same days, so flexible dates help there.

Timing the stain on new wood

New cedar or pine needs to dry out before stain will soak in. How long that takes depends on the lumber and the weather, so we check the boards rather than go by a fixed number of weeks. Building in spring and staining in fall is a common pairing here. When the wood is ready, we can handle that coat too; see staining and power washing.

Questions

Quick answers

Can you install a fence the week after a big rain?

Often, yes. We look at each hole as we dig and go deeper or wider in wet sand. If a low yard is still underwater, we’ll move the date.

Is winter a bad time for a new fence?

No. Our usual winter weather is mild enough for setting posts, and calendars tend to have more room. A hard freeze can push a day or two.

Should I fix my fence before hurricane season starts?

It’s a good idea. Getting loose posts and gates repaired in spring, before June 1, beats waiting in line with everyone else after a storm.
