Huntsville from a fence builder's view

Huntsville is the seat of Walker County, about 31 miles north of Conroe on I-45. It counted 45,822 people at the 2020 census, and recent estimates put it a little over 49,000. Sam Houston State University and the Texas Department of Criminal Justice headquarters shape the town, and the Sam Houston National Forest fills much of the ground between here and Conroe.

I-45 is the spine. SH 75 runs into town as Sam Houston Ave. (exit 112 is the turn for Elkins Lake on the south side), SH 30 passes The Reserve at Huntsville near the university, and FM 1374 leads south to Texas Grand Ranch.

Much of the ground is wooded and rolling. In Elkins Lake, elevation runs from about 352 to 505 feet across the community, so fence lines climb, step down, and cross ravines. Out on the acreage, lots of two to five acres have seasonal creeks and timber, and fences there have more to do with horses and drive gates than with neighbors.

Rules & permits

City limits, county land, and POAs

Huntsville properties fall into two broad camps. Some, like Elkins Lake, are inside city limits. Others, including most acreage south of town, are in unincorporated Walker County. A deed-restricted subdivision or POA can add its own fence review on top of either one.

We don't guess at heights, setbacks, or permit steps here. Before we quote, we confirm with the City of Huntsville or Walker County what applies to your address, get any association guidelines, and request Texas 811 locates before anyone digs.

Neighborhoods

Neighborhoods we serve around Huntsville

Elkins Lake is the established in-town choice: wooded, hilly, and built around a 102-acre lake and golf course. Texas Grand Ranch, off FM 1374, is low-density acreage with horses allowed. The Reserve at Huntsville is a newer production-built subdivision off SH 30 and I-45, about 2 miles from SHSU.

Waterwood uses Huntsville mailing addresses, but it sits on the northwest shore of Lake Livingston in San Jacinto County. See Waterwood on our Lake Livingston page.

Questions

Huntsville fence questions

Do you really come up to Huntsville from Conroe?

Yes. Huntsville is about 31 miles north of our Conroe office on I-45, and we schedule estimates and installs there the same way we do in Conroe. Call (713) 331-9419 to set a time.

Who sets the fence rules for my Huntsville property?

It depends on the address. Some neighborhoods, like Elkins Lake, are inside Huntsville city limits, while acreage south of town is in unincorporated Walker County. Deed restrictions or a POA can apply in either case. We confirm with the city or county, and with your association, before we quote.

Can you build horse fencing at Texas Grand Ranch?

Yes. The developer’s FAQ says horses are allowed, and lots run about 2 to 5 acres. We build no-climb, pipe, and board fence and wide gates. We check the POA’s fence requirements for your lot first.

My lot listing says the old fence isn't on the line. What now?

That comes up on wooded acreage, and at least one Texas Grand Ranch listing warns about it. We work from your survey and pins, and if the old fence is off the line, we talk through options before building a new one.

Is Waterwood part of your Huntsville service area?

Waterwood has a Huntsville mailing address but sits on Lake Livingston in San Jacinto County. We serve it, and you’ll find it on our Lake Livingston page and its own Waterwood page.
