Hills, pines, and three lakes inside the city
Elkins Lake covers roughly 1,000 acres on Huntsville’s south side, a short drive off I-45. It is inside the city limits, but it doesn’t feel like a grid. Streets wind over wooded hills, ground elevation changes by more than 150 feet from the low spots to the high ones, and much of the edge backs to forest and state land.
The center of it all is the 102-acre main lake, with two smaller lakes to the south. A golf course and private club, pools, and a tennis center round things out. The Elkins Lake Recreation Corporation runs the community, with a board elected by owners.
For a fence builder, that adds up to three kinds of jobs: lots on the water, where the view matters; lots on a hill, where the fence has to follow the ground; and smaller in-town lots, where a privacy fence or a dog run is the main goal.
What works here
Fences that suit Elkins Lake
Three builds we suggest most often for the mix of lake, golf, and wooded lots.
Open metal on the water
Ornamental aluminum or steel gives the yard an edge without blocking the lake or the fairway behind it.
Ornamental fencesStepped privacy fence
On hillside lots we step cedar panels down the grade so the top line stays tidy and the bottom doesn’t leave gaps for a dog to slip under.
Privacy fencesPet yards under the pines
A smaller fenced area off the back door, with a gate sized for a mower, keeps pets close without fencing the whole wooded lot.

Before you fence in Elkins Lake
- Community rules. Elkins Lake has its own recreation corporation, which may review fence plans. We verify today's requirements for your property and prepare the details for any review.
- City requirements. Because the community is inside Huntsville city limits, we check whether the city needs a permit for your project.
- Slope and runoff. On hilly lots, water moves fast after a storm. We keep the fence bottom clear of drainage paths so it doesn’t act like a dam.
- Tree roots. Mature pines and hardwoods often sit right on the property line. We adjust post spacing to miss large roots.
- Lake and golf edges. Shoreline and course-side lines can have their own limits. We look at those before suggesting a style.
- Texas 811. We request utility locates before we dig, every job.
Community and city rules can change. We verify the rules that apply to your property before we price the job and don’t build until approvals are in hand.
Questions
Elkins Lake fence questions
Do you serve Elkins Lake?
Yes. Huntsville is about 31 miles north of our Conroe office at 1135 Grand Central Pkwy, straight up I-45, and Elkins Lake sits on the south side of town close to the interstate. Call or text (713) 331-9419 to set up a free estimate.
Who reviews fences in Elkins Lake?
Elkins Lake is run by the Elkins Lake Recreation Corporation, and the community’s association or architectural committee may review fence plans. We haven’t seen a published copy of the fence rules, so we check what is in force for your address before quoting.
Do I need a city permit?
Elkins Lake is inside Huntsville city limits, so city requirements can apply alongside the community’s own rules. We check what the City of Huntsville asks for at your address before we schedule the build.
Can you build on a steep, wooded lot?
Yes. We step or rack the fence to follow the slope, set posts around roots instead of through them where we can, and plan the line so runoff still has somewhere to go.
What works on a lakefront lot here?
Most owners on the water want to keep the view, so we usually suggest open ornamental aluminum or steel on the shoreline side and save solid privacy fence for the side yards.
