Fences for Harper’s Preserve

A gated community wrapped around 160 acres of forest, where most fence questions start with trees, water, and the association.

Walking trail through a green forest

Ask someone in Harper’s Preserve what makes their backyard different, and the answer is usually the woods. The community is laid out around a 160-acre forested preserve along Harper’s Horsepen Branch, with an amenity lake stocked for fly fishing and trails threading between the three villages.

That setting is why people live here, and it shapes the fence. A line that runs along a tree edge needs posts placed around roots. A yard that faces the preserve or the lake may be held to different standards than a yard facing the next house. Shade and leaf litter keep the bottom of a wood fence damp for longer.

Harper’s Preserve is gated, with private streets, off SH 242 about a mile east of I-45. Lots vary by village, so we measure each one instead of working from a typical size.

Fences that suit Harper’s Preserve

The right fence depends on what your yard faces.

Preserve and lake lots

Where the association allows it, open ornamental metal keeps the trees or the water in view and still marks the yard.

Ornamental fences

Neighbor-facing lines

Cedar privacy fencing with sealed boards stands up better to the shade and damp of a wooded lot.

Before you fence in Harper’s Preserve

Start with the association

The community has two associations. The Harper’s Preserve Community Association enforces the deed restrictions, and a separate property owners’ association runs events. Fence changes go through the deed-restriction side. We haven’t found a published set of fence guidelines, so we never assume a height, style, or stain. We get the current requirements for that property and assemble the drawing and material details for the submittal.

Trees, roots, and shade

Much of the community is heavily wooded. We walk the line looking for large roots, low limbs, and spots that stay wet, and we shift posts a little rather than cut into a root zone. On wood fences in shady yards, sealing the boards early pays off.

Water and drainage

With a lake, a creek-fed preserve, and MUD-served drainage, some lots carry easements along the back or sides. We check the plat so the fence stays out of any area that has to remain open.

City limits and 811

Many subdivisions in this part of south Montgomery County are outside Conroe city limits. We check which rules govern your address before quoting, and no shovel goes in the ground until Texas 811 has marked the lines.

Association rules and local requirements change from time to time. We confirm the current rules for your lot before quoting.

Questions

Harper’s Preserve fence questions

Do you serve Harper's Preserve?

Yes. We work out of 1135 Grand Central Pkwy in Conroe, a short drive up I-45 from the SH 242 exit. Call or text (713) 331-9419 and we’ll set a time to walk your lot.

Can your crew get through the gate?

Yes. Since the streets are private and gated, we coordinate access with you ahead of the estimate and the build day so the crew and the material delivery get in without trouble.

Who approves a new fence in Harper's Preserve?

The Harper’s Preserve Community Association enforces the deed restrictions, so fence changes go through it. We haven’t seen published fence guidelines, so we confirm the current requirements for your village and lot and prepare the submittal before quoting.

My yard backs to the preserve. What should I build?

Rear lines on preserve and lake lots are the ones associations watch most closely, so we start with the rules for your lot. Where they allow it, open ornamental metal keeps the woods in view, and we plan post spots around big roots.

Will tree roots be a problem?

They can be. On wooded lots we move post spacing slightly to avoid large roots and keep the line straight with adjusted panel widths instead of cutting into a tree’s root zone.
