The idea
Mostly private, never stuffy
A semi-privacy fence hides most of what’s behind it but lets some light and air through. It sits between a solid privacy fence and an open picket or rail fence.
On a Conroe summer afternoon, a solid six-foot wall can trap heat and humidity in a small yard. A fence with a little give lets the breeze through, keeps flower beds along the line from sitting in deep shade, and looks lighter against a greenbelt or a pond.
Most run five to six feet tall.
Variants
Common semi-privacy designs
Shadowbox
Boards alternate on either side of the rails, so the fence looks finished from both yards.
Lattice top
A solid lower fence with a band of lattice or spaced pickets across the top foot.
Spaced boards
Vertical or horizontal boards with an even gap for a modern, airy screen.
Slatted chain link
Chain link with slats threaded through the mesh, for screening on a tight budget.

Pluses
Lower wind load than a solid fence. Better airflow through the yard. Plants along the fence get more light. Shadowbox is often appreciated by the neighbor, who gets a good side too.
Minuses
Not completely private, especially at an angle. Shadowbox uses about as much lumber as board-on-board. Some community guidelines are specific about lattice and board spacing.
Good fit for
Choose semi-privacy if
- Your yard backs to a greenbelt, pond, or preserve you’d rather not hide entirely.
- A solid fence would make a small yard feel closed in.
- You garden along the fence line.
- You want something that looks good from the neighbor’s side too.
East Texas care
Humidity: the gaps let wood dry faster after rain, but lattice still needs sealing with the rest of the fence.
Sun: UV-blocking stain on wood; nothing needed on vinyl.
Storms: gaps take load off the posts, and lattice panels can be replaced on their own.
Digging: posts set for the lot after a Texas 811 locate.

Lots that back to open space
Communities with greenbelts and preserves have many lots where a lighter fence suits the setting. Their associations review fences, and we confirm the current rules first.
Questions
Semi-privacy questions
How much can people see through a shadowbox fence?
Straight on, very little. From an angle you get glimpses through the offset boards. It is close to full privacy while still letting air move.
Do gaps really help in storms?
Yes. Air passing through the gaps takes load off the posts compared with a solid wall of boards of the same height.
Can I add a lattice top to an existing fence?
Sometimes, if the posts are long enough and still sound. If not, we can replace the posts and reuse a run of good panels below the new top.
